If you're the person who ends up ordering plastic packaging for your company—bottles, jars, clamshells, labels, whatever—this checklist is for you. A '12 oz bottle' is not a spec. It's a ballpark. Capacity to the brim? To the fill line? With a 28mm neck finish or a 33mm one?

I learned this the hard way. We approved a quote for '12 oz' PET bottles and ended up with bottles that realistically held 11.4 oz after the cap, headspace, and label coverage. My operations manager noticed the first time they filled a batch. The supplier's response: 'Capacity is measured to the brim.' Technically true. Completely useless for our production.

If color matters to your brand, don't rely on a PDF proof. Ask for a physical sample and check it under the lighting where it will actually be displayed. A Delta E of 2 to 4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4, it's visible to most people. Your 'close enough' may not be close enough.

Packaging is the product before the product is opened. If there's a subtle yellow tint, a visible seam, or a smudged logo, you're telling the customer you don't care about details.

I used to order the budget option for internal packaging lines to save money. Then a premium catalog launch got delayed because the packaging looked cheap. When I switched to a better supplier for that line, client feedback scores improved by 23%. The extra cost was small compared to the impression change.

Step 4: Compare Suppliers by Process, Not Just Unit Price
