At Amcor Rigid Plastics, I work with customers who need answers fast. A brand suddenly needs rigid containers in a week, a shipment is delayed, or a filling line is already booked. When those calls come in, the quiet panic underneath is usually the same: should we use PP or PET?

After 200-plus rush orders, our internal post-mortems keep pointing to one lesson. The fastest quote still fails if the resin does not match the product. Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are both food-safe, rigid plastics. But they are not two versions of the same thing. They solve different problems, and confusing them is the kind of mistake you discover after the bottles are filled.

Clarity: PET Wins When the Bottle Is Part of the Product

PET is the standard for clear beverage packaging. It has low haze and high gloss at typical bottle-wall thicknesses. If the product needs to look bright, visible and premium from the outside, PET is the usual place to start.

PP is naturally hazy. Clarified PP is much better than it used to be, but it still does not have the glass-like clarity of PET. (Not that hazy is wrong; a yogurt cup does not need to be transparent.) The question is whether your customer is buying what is inside or the look of the container itself.

I made this mistake by assumption earlier in my career. I assumed clear plastic meant PET. Did not verify. The sample was clarified PP, and it looked acceptable in a small jar. At a larger bottle size, the haze was obvious and made the product look dull. Looking back, I should have asked how clear the customer expected the final container to be at actual size. At the time, I was more focused on quoting quickly.

There is also a color-approval angle. If the package has brand-critical colors, do not rely on a paper Pantone chip. We ask for physical color approval in the actual resin because PP haze can change how a color reads. Delta E under 2 is the usual tolerance for brand-critical printed colors, but on a translucent substrate that level of closeness is not automatic.

Heat and Chemical Resistance: PP Handles the Aggressive Conditions

This is the dimension that surprises most buyers. PET has a higher melting point than PP on paper, but in practice standard PET bottles are not designed for hot-fill lines. At hot-fill temperatures, the polymer structure in an ordinary PET bottle can relax and distort. PP is usually the safer choice for hot-filled products and many pasteurization situations.

PP also tolerates many diluted acids, bases and cleaning chemicals better than PET. PET is more sensitive to highly alkaline products. And PP has the fatigue resistance needed for living-hinge closures, which is why so many one-piece caps and lids are made from PP.

This does not mean PP is always the tougher material. It means toughness depends on what you are exposing the package to. Heat and chemistry are the first things to check.

Barrier and Shelf Life: PET Keeps Oxygen Out; PP Blocks Moisture

PET is the better oxygen barrier. It also holds CO2 in much better than PP. That is why carbonated drinks and oxygen-sensitive products like cold-brew coffee usually end up in PET. If your product will lose flavor, color or carbonation after months on a shelf, PET is probably the right starting point.

PP is not weak on every barrier. In many formats, PP is a better water-vapor barrier than PET. So if you are trying to keep dry contents dry, PP can be the smarter choice.

That makes the material decision less obvious than a simple premium versus budget comparison. A product that is oxygen-sensitive and clear should generally go PET. A product that is moisture-sensitive, hot-filled or chemically aggressive may perform better in PP. Ask which threat is more real: oxygen or humidity.

Weight, Shipping and Why Plastic Pallets Lean Polypropylene

Density matters more than many buyers expect. PP has a density around 0.90 g/cm³, while PET is around 1.33 g/cm³. At the same wall thickness, a PP container weighs roughly a third less than PET. For bottles and jars, that affects freight costs. For crates, totes and bulk handling items, the difference becomes even more important.

That is also why plastic pallets are usually not PET. A typical plastic pallet is made from PP or HDPE. The reason is practical. A pallet needs to be light, tough, moisture-resistant and able to survive repeated impact and handling. It does not need clarity, and it does not need to hold CO2. PET brings a high-performance set of packaging qualities, but virtually none of them are useful on a pallet. If you came here searching for plastic pallet material guidance, assume PP first and make someone justify PET.

Wait, Did Amcor Buy Berry Plastics?

Because this comes up in the same procurement searches: the short answer is no, not as of early January 2025. Amcor announced a proposed all-stock combination with Berry Global in late 2024, but the transaction had not closed at the time this was written. The company people often call Berry Plastics is technically Berry Global, and a legal acquisition is not the same as a headline announcement.

Until a deal closes, suppliers remain separate legal entities. That distinction matters when a contract names a specific approved manufacturer or a food-contact material listing. I am not a lawyer or an M&A specialist, and this is one of those places where our expertise has a boundary. Do not change an approved-source list because of a rumor. After an official closing announcement, ask your supplier representative for updated documentation.

So How Do You Choose When the Deadline Is Real?

If the package must be clear, carbonated or oxygen-resistant, choose PET. If the product is hot-filled, chemically aggressive, hinge-dependent, or part of a heavy industrial application like a pallet, choose PP.

Not every case fits that cleanly. Some PET containers are specially crystallized for hot-fill service. Some PP containers use multilayer oxygen scavengers to approach PET barrier performance. Those are engineering solutions, not standard ordering specs. A good supplier will ask what you are filling before choosing.

That is the final thing I have learned from deadline work: the best vendors know their boundaries. They ask about fill temperature before quoting. They ask whether the product is carbonated. They ask what color tolerance the artwork needs. A supplier who says either material works without asking one question is quoting a price, not a package solution.

I still feel post-decision doubt after a rush order ships. A few months ago, I chose PET for a clear tea beverage without confirming the exact pasteurization profile. The container worked because the hot rinse was short and cool enough. It could easily have gone the other way. If I could redo that decision, I would have asked for the line temperature before opening the order.

PP vs PET plastic is not an aesthetic preference. It is a risk decision about clarity, heat, moisture, oxygen, weight and physical duty. Ask the material questions first. When you do, suppliers like us can move much faster on the actual deadline.
