No Single Right Answer (But There Is a Right Answer for You)

There isn't. But there is a right answer for your specific situation. The way I see it now, it comes down to which of three scenarios you're in:

Scenario A: Food Contact, Cosmetics, or Anything That Touches a Body

If that's you, don't overthink it. PET is your default. It's FDA-compliant for direct food contact, it's clear, it doesn't leach plasticizers the way some other resins can, and it's one of the most recyclable plastics in the waste stream. For cold and room-temperature products, it's about as close to a no-brainer as packaging gets.

But there's a catch: PVC's density is about 1.4 g/cm³, while PP is around 0.9. For the same part volume, you get more parts per kilogram of PP. PVC isn't bad. For chemical pipes, electrical conduit, and other long-term industrial uses, it's still a workhorse. But for packaging and consumer goods, PP usually wins on weight, recyclability, and processability. Plus, PP doesn't carry the same disposal burden—PVC has chlorine in it, which creates HCl when burned. That matters if your customer's end-of-life requirement is 'must go in the normal recycling bin.'

Here's the $3,200 mistake I keep referencing. In 2019, I approved a PVC blister tray for a hand tool because the resin price was 12% lower per pound. It passed every mechanical test. If you're comparing materials, don't just look at resin price per pound. Ask your supplier for the part weight in both resins. The difference can flip your decision.
