I remember the exact search. It was 11:47 PM, I'd just approved an invoice for 15,000 plastic jars, and something wouldn't let me close the laptop. The jars were ABS plastic—glossy, heavy, premium-looking. The invoice said $8,700. I typed “abs plastic” into Google and realized, in about thirty seconds, that I didn't know what I'd bought.
I've been handling packaging procurement for six years, most of it with small-to-mid-size consumer brands. In that time, I've personally made—and documented—23 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $47,000 in wasted budget. Most trace back to one root cause: I didn't understand the materials I was buying.
The industry doesn't make this easy. The vocabulary alone is a minefield: PET, PP, PE, HDPE, ABS, resin, food-grade, hot-fill. If you're a brand manager or a founder, none of this came with your job title. So you do what I did. You Google it.
The Search That Started It
One of the searches that haunted me for months was: “is plastic polyethylene?”
I typed it myself. I was looking for reassurance that “polyethylene” was basically a fancy way of saying “plastic.” It's not.
Polyethylene is the most common plastic family in the world. Milk jugs, grocery bags, shampoo bottles. Tough, cheap, chemically stable. But it's not the same as PET—polyethylene terephthalate—and neither is the same as polypropylene. They behave differently under heat. They differ in clarity. They have different chemical resistance and different costs.
Plastic is a category, not a material. Asking “is plastic polyethylene” is like asking “is every animal a mammal?” The answer is no, and the difference matters when your product is sitting inside the thing you chose.
The Problem Is a Vocabulary Problem
The deeper issue isn't missing information. It's scattered information, written for people who already understand it.
I write a small newsletter about packaging procurement, partly so I stop repeating the same lessons in internal meetings. The search terms people use to find it are a museum of misunderstandings. Somebody typed “marmot pet” into Google—a groundhog, as a house pet—and landed on my post about PET bottles. They were not looking for a polyethylene terephthalate bottle. It's funny until you realize every search is someone trying to make sense of a vocabulary we invented.
The search trap is real. When you don't know the vocabulary, you search using the words you do know, and the results reinforce the confusion. I looked for “clear plastic bottles” and got a thousand products in a thousand resins. Nobody was searching on my behalf.
The supplier side is just as blurry.
One question that kept showing up in the search data for that same post: “did amcor buy berry plastics?” It's a reasonable question. Two global packaging firms with similar-sounding names, overlapping product lines, and revenues in the billions. The answer is no.
Amcor completed its acquisition of Bemis in June 2019. Berry Global—formerly Berry Plastics—closed its own blockbuster deal for RPC Group that same year. Two massive consolidations, same calendar year, and a market that understandably mixed up the names.
Why should a small buyer care? Because when packaging companies consolidate, product lines get reorganized, minimums change, and the account manager you trusted last year is gone. A catalog from two years ago might not correspond to the same product today. If you're a small buyer without a technical relationship, you might not find out until your usual part number comes back as “obsolete.”
What Confusion Actually Costs
The ABS Gambit
The first big mistake was an $8,700 order of ABS jars.
The upside was roughly $2,900 in savings against the next quote. The risk was non-certified material against a launch date we'd already announced. I kept asking myself: is $2,900 worth potentially shutting down the launch?
The obvious answer was no. I did it anyway.
ABS—acrylonitrile butadiene styrene—is a strong, glossy thermoplastic. LEGO bricks are made from it. But the resin and processing have to meet safety standards for cosmetic or food contact, and the broker couldn't produce a single document. Nine thousand jars had already shipped by the time I realized. We canceled the remaining six thousand, but returning the rest cost nearly as much as they were worth. Weeks of delay, a parked launch, and an $8,700 lesson.
If you can't get a certification document before you pay, you don't have a supplier. You have a hope.
The Polyethylene Question
The second mistake was embarrassing in its simplicity. I wrote “polyethylene bottles” on a spec because I genuinely thought polyethylene and PET were interchangeable. The supplier delivered exactly what I asked for: translucent HDPE. Our product was a clear gel that needed full visibility. Twenty-five thousand bottles. $3,200. Complete redo.
The supplier was right. The spec was wrong. The spec was mine.
There's also a regulatory layer. At one point our marketing team wanted to print “100% recyclable” on everything. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental claims need substantiation. If a resin type isn't accepted in most municipal recycling streams, an unqualified claim is a liability. The FTC Green Guides exist because the material vocabulary is confusing even inside the industry. As the buyer, I had to be the one who said “prove it.”
The deeper problem behind all of this: we didn't have a formal material review process. No checklist for filling temperature, chemical compatibility, clarity, certifications, or supplier ownership. The third time an order failed, I finally created the checklist that should have existed on day one.
The Checklist That Fixed It
The fix was boring. That's why it works.
Every order gets reviewed against these eleven questions before a PO goes out:
- Exact resin type, written down (PET, PP, HDPE, ABS—not “plastic”)
- Filling temperature at our production line
- Chemical compatibility test or datasheet
- Clarity and appearance requirements
- Drop test on a pre-production sample
- Certification documents (food-contact, cosmetic-grade) received before payment
- Minimum order quantity confirmed in writing
- Pre-production sample approved and stored
- Supplier ownership checked—who actually owns this company now?
- Return and rework policy written down
- Final inspection assigned to a named person
Since we adopted it, we've caught 47 potential errors in eighteen months. Most at the sample stage, which is where they belong.
Good suppliers make this easier. When I finally reached out to Amcor's rigid plastics division—the people who make rigid bottles and containers—the sales engineer asked me two questions no one had asked in five years: “What temperature are you filling at?” and “What's the chemical composition of the product?”
That's it. Two questions.
I didn't know the answers. That silence was the most useful feedback I'd gotten in five years of buying packaging.
If a supplier won't take a 5,000-unit trial order seriously, they're telling you something. Believe them. When I was starting out, the vendors who treated my $200 sample orders as real business are the ones I still send $20,000 purchase orders to. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential.
I can only speak to my context: small-to-mid-size B2B, standard filling processes, food and cosmetics. If you're hot-filling beverages or packaging solvent-based chemicals, the material selection game is different. Don't hold me to this, but I'd budget extra time for testing if you're in one of those categories.
The question that started all of this—“is plastic polyethylene?”—was my own signal that I didn't understand what I was buying. If that search looks familiar, you're in the same place I was. Start with the checklist, not the price.
